In Phuket at the Big Buddha It is still under construction as you can see from all the bamboo sticks supporting all the shoe-less, helmet-less Burmese contraction workers. The view from the top of this mountain was SPECTACULAR! The baby blue skies and the bright blue ocean mixed with the careless flow of the clouds made the surrounding view of Phuket on Big Buddha mountain that much more mesmerizing! Walking up the steps of the mountains, you will see golden bells ranging from tiny to large, each with it's own harmonious sound. These bells have wishes written on them in every language you can imagine by travelers who come to visit the Big Buddha. Anytime the bells chime, it is to bring good energy or good karma to your wish. There are also flags from every nationality blowing in the breeze, and you will see people from every nationality coming to witness the events taking part and the views in which Big Buddha Mountain is so famously known for. The Big Buddha is made up of hundreds of thousands of 5x5 inch tiles that are written upon by visitors to forever be a part of the statue that stands upon the heights point of the 'island' of Phuket. I had the honor of going into the center of the hollowed out Buddha, and it had miraculous shades of gold flakes decorating the pillars in which hold the structure up. Surrounding the bottom of the Big Buddha were statues of deceased monks who worshipped there, as well as the different buddhas resembling each day of the week (2 different buddhas representing Wednesday) There is a small place to meditate on the mountain which is lead by the calmest, most peaceful man I have ever witnessed. We mediated silently in a group lead by his student and understudy a month later, and it was one of the most powerful experiences I have ever felt. Pure Happiness. You literally exude happiness to others and yourself. We started by doing a couple hand motions to get your mind focused, then he lead us in giving happiness first to our mothers, then happiness to our fathers, then happiness to our siblings, and then to other members of our families, then to our friends and the people who know us the best, then to the rest of the world?.and it was such a consuming feeling. I caught myself, in the middle of giving happiness to people, feeling so overwhelmed by a euphoric bliss that I had tears streaming down my face. I often repeat that meditative practice on my own, and wonder if the people I send happiness to feel it??Regardless, it makes me feel like I'm beaming with overjoyed radiance, so I'm glad it's taking affect in some way. When we left Big Buddha after enjoying the Thai sounds of a middle school band and soaking up the views and energy of the mountain, our friend Gin (Jean), and tour guide for the day, showed us rubber trees that drip latex into coconut shells and are used to make things such as tires. She would also pick things like hot peppers and beans which we neglected to notice on our journey through the jungly forests. We then proceeded to be treated to a wonderful meal which is a traditional Thai Barbecue. The restaurant will bering you raw meats such as G?ng (shrimp), Blah (fish), Hōy nahng rom (oyster), Blah m?uk (squid), and some other random seafood, and we would put all the raw meat in a large boiling pot full of soup to cook the meat and add flavor to the soup. There were all kinds of other additives like noodles, cabbage, spices, and herbs to add to make your broth and meats tasty. It was a huge meal and one that was very entertaining to make! After our filling lunch we wandered around the beach, admiring the scene around us and then proceeded to get a wonderful (and cheap) Thai Massage!? We have lived such a happy life in Thailand and the adventures continue!
